Artefill Treatment at Rio Grande Dermatology

Artefill is a long-lasting, and even possibly permanent filler. Similar to Collagen, Juvederm, and Restylane, Artefill is used to fill-in various lines and creases on the face.  It is most commonly used to fill the crease that extends from the side of the nose down to the corner of the mouth. Unlike the other fillers that last from 4 months up to a year, Artefill has been proven in recent studies to last as long as 5 years, and is almost certainly permanent.

Artefill is tiny particles of acrylic

Artefill is composed of microscopic spheres of polymethacrylate, which are essentially tiny particles of acrylic. The polymethacrylate spheres are suspended in bovine collagen to allow an even dispersement through the skin. Over time, the collagen is broken down by the body, but the polymethacrylate spheres persist and stimulate new collagen production.

Treatment is quick

The treatment is quick and easy, typically requiring no more than 10 to 15 minutes and discomfort is minimal. Rio Grande dermatologists have found that 3 treatments separated by 3 to 4 weeks are necessary to achieve the full benefit of Artefill.

Minimal side effects

Side effects of Artefill are rare and include a slight chance of bruising, which in the worst case scenario, can last as long as 7-10 days. Other possible side effects include a small amount of redness and/or swelling at the injection sites. The rarest of complications is the formation of small, firm bumps in the treated areas. These typically resolve spontaneously over a few weeks, but if they persist, the skin can be injected with a small amount of cortisone to bring about a more rapid resolution.
