Collagen Treatment at Rio Grande Dermatology

Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast are “fillers” composed of human collagen. We consider collagen products to be very “small” fillers, meaning they impart a very modest volume enhancement to the treated areas. This can be disappointing for individuals desiring a dramatic change in appearance. However, for patients who prefer a very subtle enhancement, and who desire minimal downtime, collagen is ideal.

10 to 15 minute procedure
At Rio Grande Dermatology, the 10 to 15 minute procedure requires a series of injections of the collagen into the desired treatment areas. Prior to the injections, a topical anesthetic lotion (numbing cream) is applied to the skin to diminish the discomfort of the injections. The collagen injection contains a very small amount of anesthetic so that the injections of collagen actually numb the areas as they are treated, making subsequent injections during the visit less painful.

Minimal side effects
Side effects include minimal discomfort during the treatment. Discomfort after the treatment is very unusual. There is a small chance of bruising, which resolves spontaneously in 2 to 3 days. There is usually a minor amount of swelling that lasts for a few hours. 

The effects of collagen last for 3 to 4 months.
